BOF/BOP FURNACES
The basic oxygen process (BOP) converts molten iron that comes from the blast furnace into steel. Scrap steel and lime is added to the molten iron and is poured into the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) vessel. Oxygen is blown into the molten metal through water cooled lances. It reacts with the molten metal which heats up to a refining temperature, burns off the excess carbon and other impurities and also stirs the metal. The inside walls of the vessel are lined with a special chemically basic brick, which also reacts with the mixture to remove sulfur and other impurities. During the process, lime or dolomite is added to the BOF vessel during the refining process to attract the impurities and creates slag. Once the oxygen blowing process is complete, the slag is removed and the vessel pours the steel into large ladles, which holds and transfers the molten steel to the caster.
