Roughing Mills and Stands   QTY 0

Roughing Mills and Stands
Blooming and reversing roughing mills are very similar in design. The major difference between them is the incoming product. Blooming mills are used to reduce the cross sectional area of a cast ingot into a bloom or billet. Blooming mills are typically 2-high reversing design with 30” to 50” diameter work rolls. Reversing roughing mills are a similar design and start with a cast or rolled billet and are used to reduce the cross sectional area of the workpiece prior to entering a finishing mill. The work rolls of roughing mills range from 16” to 36” in diameter. In either case, the rolls are driven in one direction as the ingot, bloom or billet is passed between the rolls which reduce the height of the workpiece. After the workpiece clears the mill. The rolls are stopped and their direction of rotation reversed. In many cases while the roll direction is reversing the workpiece is rotated 90 degrees using manipulators prior to re-entering the works rolls for further reduction. The end product from both blooming mills and reversing roughing mills is a billet that is smaller and longer than the starting product.
