There are several types of grinders used in the steel industry. Billet and slab grinders remove scale from billets, blooms and slab. Some traveling grinders such as a Midwest grinder ride on rail and grind a stationery bloom or billet clamped to a stationery rest. Other grinders such as a Centro Morgardshammar are stationery and the bloom or slab is clamped to a grinding car that travels back and forth in front of the grinding wheel.

Roll grinders grind the work rolls and back up rolls used in cold rolling mills and are sized by the maximum roll diameter. Roll grinders are belt driven to lessen the vibrations during the machine operations. Most grinders are CNC today.
