There are different types of cars used in steel mills for transporting coils, slab, blooms and hot metal. Hot metal is transported in torpedo cars which have the shape of a submarine and are also called hot metal cars. The torpedo car transfers iron from the blast furnace to the BOF. At the BOF, the iron is dumped from the car into a ladle. Coil and slab transfer cars are either motorized or pull by a cable winch, or a hydraulic cylinder. Manipulator cars are a self-propelled, operator driven machine that is used in a foundry application.
