A coil box on a hot strip mill is a coiling device which is located after the roughing stand and just prior to the finishing stands. Their purpose is to collect the strip in coil form so that a uniform temperature of the coil can be maintained from head to tail ends. Once the loose coil is wrapped, the tail end of the original strip is fed into the finishing stands and the coil unwinds. A hot strip mill coil box is an intermediary process and not a process to tightly wind coil strip. A coil box in a cold mill refers to a coil preparation device just prior to typical payoff reel. It was a common design employed by both Mesta and United which consisted of two rotating blocker rolls on an elevating coil car which supported the outside circumference of the coil while two rotating side plates would keep the coil edges square and in line with the mill.
