ERW mills consist of multiple roll forming mill stands, each of which transform a flat piece of strip into a round pipe shape. The edges of the strip are then welded together using a special high frequency weld in an inert gas atmosphere to make a very strong weld. The seamless pipe and tube making process begins with a steel plug, steel slug or billet that is heated to molten temperature and pierced on a piercing mill to initiate the elongated and hollow nature of pipe.
