LADLE METALLURGY

A ladle metallurgy station (LMS) or ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF), as it is also called, is used to refine molten steel into specialty grades while remaining in the ladle. The steel is first melted in a basic oxygen facility (BOF) or in an electric arc furnace (EAF), poured into a ladle and then taken to the LMS or LMF. Different elements are added to the heat in the ladle at the ladle metallurgy station depending on the grade being made. By using a ladle metallurgy station instead of the BOF or EAF, another heat can be started in the BOF or EAF, thus increasing the capacity of the melt shop. A ladle metallurgical station consists primarily of an electric ladle arc furnace and an alloy additive system. The ladle furnace is generally a furnace roof top with electrodes that look very similar to an EAF. Argon bubbling is used to stir the metal in the ladle.
