DC traction motors are direct current electric motors that provides the rotational torque of a machine, usually for conversion into linear motion (traction). Traction motors are used in electrically powered rail vehicles such as locomotives and trolleys, as well as vehicles with electrical transmission systems such as diesel-electric, and some DC cranes. Traditionally, traction motors are series-wound brushed DC motors, usually running on a voltage up to 600 volts DC.
