TIN LINES

Tin lines are a coil processing line that apply a very thin coating of tin to coils of carbon steel strip. Tin plate is made by passing cold rolled, annealed and pickled steel strip through tanks containing tin anodes on either side of the strip all of which is submerged in electrolyte bath. Tin dissolves from the anode and is transported through the electrolyte and deposited on the strip. The thickness of the tin coating is determined by the amount of electric current flowing between the tin anode and the steel strip. The coated strip then passes thought a melting tower where the temperature of the strip is raised by resistance or induction heating to just above the melting point of the tin. The tin begins to melt and flow uniformly across the strip then the strip is immediately quenched in water producing a bright, shiny surface. The majority of tin-plated steel made today is further electroplated with a very thin layer of chromium to prevent dulling of the tin surface from oxidation.
