REHEAT FURNACES

Slabs, ingots, billets and blooms that have been cast must be reheated prior to rolling. Ingots are reheated in car bottom, batch or rotary hearth type furnaces and then forged using heavy duty presses. Slabs and billets are systematically fed into a walking type furnace so that a particular feed rate and desired output is achieved and maintained for rolling. Reheat furnaces can be gas or oil fired with natural gas being the most common fuel which is mixed with combustion air at the furnace burners. Modern reheat furnaces use a recuperator system to preheat the combustion air by passing the exhaust gasses from the reheat furnace across a tube bundle through which the combustion air is flowing. While furnaces are typically rated in BTU’s per hour, reheat furnaces are generally rated in how many tons of steel can be reheated per hour from ambient temperature.
