Pinion stands are mechanical gearboxes that are used to transfer the torque from a motor or gear reducer with one shaft, to the rolls in a rolling mill where the rolls are individually driven. The pinion stand must have two output shafts for a two high mill, or one with two rolls and three output shafts for three high mills. Pinion stands have a straight 1:1 gear ratio meaning, the two or three output shafts turn at the same speed as the input shaft. The purpose of a pinion is to convert the single motion of an input shaft from the motor or the gear into the double or triple motion of the output shafts. The output shafts are usually positioned over each other in a vertical manner. A combination gear and pinion stand combines a gear reducer and a pinion stand into one driving unit. The combination pinion stand will have a gear ratio. Pinions and combination pinions are sized by the center to center of the output shafts. Common sizes are 8 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch , 16 inch, 18 inch etc., all the way up to 44 inch and in some cases even higher.
